The Department of Sociology of Graduate School (CASS) was founded in 1982, with Prof. FEI Hsiao-t’ung as its earliest tutor. It saw WU Chengyi as the first director, who was succeeded by HE Jianzhang (Director), SHEN Dade (Deputy Director), YANG Yabin (Director), SHEN Yuan (Deputy Director) and LI Peilin (Director). The present director is CHEN Guangjin.
The department now offers Ph.D. and Master programs in sociology. Ph.D. research areas include: developmental sociology, business organization and social development, organizations and institutional transition, social organizations and structure, familial sociology, social stratification and fluxion, economical anthropology etc. And master research areas include: methods of sociological research, social security, rural sociology, developmental sociology, urban sociology, cultural sociology, social issues, social psychology, social theory and so on.

The faculty now has 12 Ph.D. tutors and 20 other Master tutors. The number of graduated Ph. D. and Master is 87 and 31, respectively.

It offers basic programs of sociological theories and methods. The programs shall be designated in accordance with different research areas.

In September 1994, it was validated to cultivate in-service Master united with Hong Kong Shue Yan University. Since then, 14 students have obtained their Master degrees and 6 students graduated in 2007.
 
In September 1998, it was validated to admit overseas Master and PhD degree applicants.

  History:
The Department of Sociology of Graduate School (CASS) was founded in 1982. Prof. FEI Xiaotong was the founding chair. Mr. Wu Chengyi, HE Jianzhang,  YANG Yabin, and LI Peilin were among the earlier directors.



  Current degree program:
We offer Ph.D. and Master programs in sociology. We are currently focusing on the following research areas: rural sociology, sociology of development, industrial sociology, social stratification, theory of social assessment, organizational study, family study, sociological research methods, social policy research, urban sociology, cultural study, and social psychology.

We offer the following general courses for all the students: Sociological theories& methods, Sociological psychology, Culture anthropology, Rural sociology.

Other courses will be arranged by each supervisor according to the program requirements.
