Family & Gender Studies
Among others, the Family & gender Research Department is one of the earliest in the Institute of Sociology, CASS. It focuses its research on family sociology and gender study, of which the former, as a branch of sociology, chiefly deals with family structure, family evolution, changes in family systems, etc; and the latter with the gender equality, the stains of women, Feminist theory, etc. It has fulfilled such programs as ¡°Family Survey in 5 Cities¡±, ¡°Rural Family Survey in 14 Provinces and Cities¡±, ¡°Employment and Families of Professional Women in China and Japan¡±, ¡°Survey of the Elderly in 10 Cities around China¡± (with the cooperation of Tianjin Academy of Social Sciences), ¡°Family Awareness and Living Situation in Chinese and Japanese Cities: A Comparative Study of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Bangkok¡±, as well as ¡°Studies on the Returned Overseas Chinese: Impressions of Overseas Study, Occupational Mobility and Accomplishments¡±. ¡°Support of the Old in China¡¯s Rural and Urban Areas: Status quo, Tendency and Countermeasures¡± It also played host to the ¡°Symposium on the Comparison between Chinese and Japanese Families¡± (1991, 1992) and the international symposium on ¡°Families and Future in the Asia-Pacific Region¡±.
